An integrated health and fitness facility featuring a fitness center and emergency room is open for business in central Ohio.
Mount Carmel Health's MC Fitness & Health facility in Lewis Center, Ohio, offers fitness club amenities, health services and an emergency department in one location. The facility opened in January after a soft opening in December 2015.
MC Fitness is managed by Power Wellness, Chicago, and occupies 50,000 square feet in the 130,000-square-foot, $32.8 million building. The fitness center has the capacity to handle 4,000 to 5,000 members. The six fitness specialists on staff have degrees in exercise science.
"As the healthcare industry continues to transition away from just treating people after they are already sick, to one that focuses on prevention and keeping people well, Mount Carmel is at the forefront of this change in central Ohio. This facility embodies that leadership," Richard Streck, executive vice president and chief clinical operations officer, Mount Carmel Health System, said during the grand opening ceremony.
The facility was initially announced as an urgent care center, but county residents asked for increased emergency services, Mount Carmel Health spokesperson Jason Koma told Columbus Business First.
The facility offers integrated medical care through the emergency department, cardiac rehabilitation, chronic disease management, imaging services, occupational health, physical therapy and a Women’s Health Center, along with other primary care and specialty physician offices, including Mount Carmel's sports medicine specialists.
MC Fitness has cardio, functional and strength training equipment, workout areas and fitness studios, an indoor walking and jogging track, an eight-lane lap pool, exercise pool and therapy pool, locker rooms with complimentary towel service, showers, whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms. Fitness assessments, group exercise, mind-body and aquatic classes, personal training; massage therapy, medically integrated fitness programs for weight loss and chronic medical conditions, personalized programs for members and child care are also offered.
The aquatic amenities and cardio equipment are located on the first floor, and the track and exercise studios are on the second floor. The second-floor exercise spaces are located next to physicians' offices and a physical therapy area. The fitness center has 50 to 70 group exercise classes on a weekly basis.
MC Fitness & Health Fitness Director Sean McCloud told ThisWeek News that the hope is the integrated nature of the complex will help recovering patients transition into gym members.
"We want to find a way to get them over here without any of that gym intimidation," McCloud told ThisWeek News. "It's a great feeling to know you're working out and can walk over to your doctor you just saw a week before."
