University of Portland Building $23 Million Rec Center

Construction is under way at the University of Portland (OR), which is building a new $23 million student recreation center.

The last of the steel beams were put in place this week for the skeletal frame of the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center, the Portland Business Journal reported. Construction began in May and is expected to be completed next year. Skanska USA Building Inc. is the construction firm for the center, which will replace 87-year-old Howard Hall on campus.

According to the university, the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center will include a 2,850-square-foot strength and weight training area, three gyms totaling 23,090 square feet with an additional 2,830 square feet for locker rooms, a 730-square-foot climbing wall, 3,670 square feet for cardio training, 5,040 square feet for cycling and yoga classes, a 10,130-square-foot suspended track and a 2,150-square-foot training room and courtyard that overlooks campus.

The new center is being funded entirely by donations from friends and benefactors of the University of Portland.
