SACRAMENTO, CA -- A new recreation and wellness center is taking shape at Sacramento State University. The $77 million, 151,000-square-foot facility is slated for completion in September 2010.
The center will unite student fitness options with medical care and social activity spaces under one roof, university officials said.
“We want to give our students the ability to go to the Recreation and Wellness Center for a check-up with a doctor, and if it is determined that that student needs to lose 10 pounds, we want the doctor to be able to make a follow-up appointment on the spot with an exercise trainer under the same roof,” Leslie Davis, executive director of Sacramento State’s University Union, said in a statement.
The facility is designed to provide holistic health care for 28,000 students and 3,400 faculty and staff. It will feature a rock climbing wall, studios for cardio and weight training, exercise classes, nutrition counseling, four basketball courts, a multi-activity court for sports such as indoor hockey or soccer, a pharmacy and a lab, plus health offices for physical therapy, optometry and mental health.
The center will be the second building on the Sacramento State campus to strive for LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Hornberger & Worstell, San Francisco, was chosen as the architectural firm. University officials also selected CSI Software, Houston, to provide management software for the center.
