BAKERSFIELD, CA -- A new $22 million student recreation center was unveiled at California State University Bakersfield (CSUB) in late April.
The 75,000-square-foot facility will be staffed by 100 students, university officials said. In 2005, the school’s students voted to approve tuition increases to pay for the center.
The new CSUB rec center features a 13,000-square-foot fitness area that is equipped with 60 cardiovascular machines, strength training areas and machines, plus 24 LCD big-screen TVs.
Seven new group exercise studios at the center with specialized hardwood floors, mirrors and sound systems were designed to host a variety of classes such as aerobics, martial arts and yoga. A dedicated personal training room also was added to the facility.
In addition, the new rec center includes:
• A 3-court gymnasium
• An indoor 32-foot-high climbing wall with a separate bouldering rock
• An indoor three-lane suspended jogging/walking track
• A juice bar
• Day-use locker and shower facilities
Rec center memberships will be free for students. Former students who paid fees for the facility beginning in fall 2005 also get free use of the center for the number of quarters they paid. Faculty, staff and alumni will have to buy a membership, university officials said.
