MIAMI -- When you think of Miami, chances are you think of swimsuit-clad people having fun in the sun, but Miami’s image just expanded as the city was named the fattest city in America for 2009 by Men’s Fitness magazine. In its 11th annual survey, the magazine also named Salt Lake City as the country’s fittest city.

Along with a research firm, Men’s Fitness editors looked at the country’s 50 biggest cities and graded them in several categories, including the percentage of overweight people, number of fitness centers and number of sports stores.

Editors said Miami has a high number of overweight people, in addition to poor air quality and a high rate of TV viewing. Salt Lake City, on the other hand, scored well for lower obesity rates, more fitness-minded citizens and its wealth of parks and fitness centers.

The other top five fittest cities were Colorado Springs, CO; Minneapolis; Denver and Albuquerque, NM. Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Las Vegas and New York rounded out the list of top five fattest cities. Visit the Men’s Fitness site to view the full lists.
