Gamblers or not, those that plan to attend IHRSA's 23rd Annual Trade Show and Convention in Sin City are sure to be winners. The event, which will be held March 22 to 25 at the Las Vegas Hilton, in Las Vegas, will focus on the concept of leadership and how it applies to the industry. With more than 400 exhibitors, three keynote speakers and six feature presentations, it's a sure bet that the anticipated 8,000 attendees from more than 70 countries will get more than they expect from the event.
The theme of “leadership” is nothing less than perfect, as the highlight of the gathering will be a presentation by Rudy Giuliani, the man declared “the nation's mayor” following the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. After guiding our country through the difficult time with poise and strength, Giuliani wrote “Leadership,” a New York Times' bestseller and founded Giuliani Partners, a management consulting firm that helps decision makers in both the private and public sectors operate more effectively in daily operations, as well as long-term planning. Make sure you don't miss the opportunity to hear Giuliani speak on Tuesday, March 23 at 9:00 a.m.
Daniel Goleman and Bill Novelli will also give keynote speeches. Goleman is author of “Emotional Intelligence,” a New York Times bestseller, and co-chairman of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence. On Wednesday, March 24 at 8:30 a.m., he will focus on the insight each of us needs to understand our strengths and weaknesses so that we can work successfully with others. Novelli, the executive director and CEO of AARP, the non-profit, nonpartisan membership organization with 35 million members age 50 and older, will discuss political leadership on Thursday, March 25 at 9:00 a.m.
Along with the keynote speakers, six feature presentations geared toward every club representative will be given. Joe Theismann, former NFL quarterback and on-air sports personality, will use his entertaining style to focus on “Managing to Win,” while Dr. Bob Arnot, the medical voice of NBC news will present on how we can all be our personal best. For those independent club owners, Jack Faris, president and CEO of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), will speak on the power of small business and Barbara Harris, editorial voice of Shape magazine, will pinpoint the seven elements that her publication considers the benchmark of total fitness. Other speakers include Dr. Jim Loehr, author of “The Power of Full Engagement,” and Pamela Peeke, M.D, M.P.H., fitness expert.
While in the educational mindset during the four days of the IHRSA event, you can also attend any of the 80 seminars, panels and forums covering 12 different instructive tracks. The tracks include fitness and personal training, healthcare and wellness, human resources, leadership, sales and marketing, supplier seminars, tennis, management and operations, member service and retention, programming and community development, spa and special populations. Each session is presented by leading authorities on the topic, including club representatives, authors and special interest groups, and several sessions will be repeated to ensure that every attendee has an opportunity to hear the information from the speakers.
If all of this educational instruction sounds a bit overwhelming, then make sure to hit up the more relaxed activities of the event. On Tuesday, March 23 at 7:35 a.m., SPRI Products is sponsoring a Kickbox/Core Training class by Jazzercise, while on Wednesday, March 24 at 6:30 a.m., The Pilates Coach is sponsoring a Pilates class. Also, on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, an early morning workout sponsored by IDEA Health and Fitness Association will be held at 6:30 a.m. Another fun option is working on your golf swing during the golf outing at Canyon Gate Country Club. This activity is on Monday, March 22 at 7 a.m. and requires pre-registration.
We can't forget about the trade show itself. With more than 400 exhibitors, you will be able to check out the latest innovations in equipment, products and other services for your club. Even if you aren't looking to invest in the latest goods, the show is a great opportunity to meet those representatives in the industry that you might be working with in the future.
Networking opportunities will be readily available during the trade show and at other times, like during “AQUA,” IHRSA's opening reception. The event takes place on Monday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m., where poolside cocktails will be abundant amongst the sounds of jazz and blues throughout the evening. And as a farewell to Sin City, make sure to attend “ICE,” the grand finale of the convention on Thursday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m.
We all know what Las Vegas is famous for — cheap thrills, quickie weddings, fast dice, glitz and glamour — and because of these things, more than often the odds are not in our favor. But, one thing is for sure, among the bright lights and heavy betting in Las Vegas, you're sure to get more than you banked on at the 2004 IHRSA Convention and Trade Show.
