Planet Fitness plans to open locations in Shawnee Mission, Kansas; Greenbriar, Georgia; Johnstown, New York; and Owosso, Michigan this year. The Shawnee Mission gym will be 29,000 square feet and the largest Planet Fitness club in the Kansas City metro area, according to the Shawnee Mission Post.

Genesis Health Clubs, Wichita, Kansas, acquired 19 24 Hour Fitness clubs in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma this week. Genesis Health Clubs owner Rodney Steven sold six of the clubs to Gold's Gym, while purchasing six other facilities from Gold's Gym for a net of 19 new clubs. Steven shared details on the transaction in this Club Industry report.

24 Hour Fitness has started an application to open a location in Tacoma, Washington, in the site of a former Albertsons’ grocery store, according to the Tacoma News-Tribune, citing city officials and documents. The documents on file anticipate a possible Aug. 1, 2017 opening.

Gold’s Gym will be moving into the site of a former clothing department store at a shopping center in Wichita Falls, Texas, according to the Times Record News.

The Austin, Minnesota, city council on June 6 approved purchase and lease agreements for the $35 million Austin Community Recreation Center project. Plans call for the Austin YMCA to operate the facility, which will include a new YMCA and community spaces, according to the Austin Daily Herald.

Anytime Fitness in Billings, Montana, is feeling more like a "New York City club" after it relocated to a new downtown location in February, according to a Billings Gazette report. In Tampa Bay, a new location is expected to open on West Hillsborough Avenue in late June, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Orangetheory Fitness opened a location in Palm Desert, California, in April, according to The Desert Sun. Franchisee Alma Smith, who owns the Palm Desert location with her husband, Jeff, has a goal of opening additional locations in La Quinta and Palm Springs in the future.

The Gaukler Family Wellness Health Physical Education Center will open in Valley City, North Dakota, by the end of August, according to the Jamestown Sun. The $16 million project is a partnership between Valley City Parks and Recreation and Valley City State University.

The Wichita Falls, Texas, YMCA is renovating and expanding. The first phase of renovations includes the construction of sporting facilities, a pool and educational center at the Bill Bartley Family location. The total project cost is $16 million, according to a Texomashomepage.com report. More details on the project are available here.

NOMAD Aquatics and Fitness, Huntersville, North Carolina, has been sold to a new owner, according to a media release from Viking Mergers & Acquisitions. Steve and Myra Billings sold the 38,000-square-foot club after 25 years to retire. It was acquired by Atlanta swim coach Mark Minier, who wanted to invest in an aquatics center of his own.

The 37,000-square-foot Kent County Recreation Center recently opened in Dover, Delaware. The $12 million building was funded with a partnership between Kent County and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware, according to a delawareonline.com report.

Officials celebrated the opening of the Dewey Community Center on June 4 in Waco, Texas. The $3 million, 20,000-square-foot building includes a renovated gymnasium with seating, a computer lab, game room, fitness and locker rooms, classrooms and a multipurpose room, according to the Waco Tribune-Herald.

The La Crosse, Wisconsin, YMCA celebrated the opening of its 25,000-square-foot expansion on June 6. The expansion includes an 8,000-square-foot wellness center, a cycling studio and a group fitness center, according to WKBT-TV.

The YMCA of Greater Houston discontinued fitness facility services at the Creekside Park YMCA in May, and the location will close when day camp programs finish at the end of the summer, according to a Community Impact Newspaper report.

Griffin Club Los Angeles, a social, athletic and tennis club, has completed renovations of its pool area. Renovations include a new 25-meter pool surrounded by six 50-foot palm trees, children's pool, spa and landscaping.

Cornerstone Health & Fitness, Doylestown, New York, has leased space for possible expansion in a New Hope, New York, according to the New Hope Free Press. The 20,000-square-foot site, which formerly housed a supermarket, has been vacant since Dec. 31, 2015.

The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission celebrated its renovated St. Bernard Recreation Center on June 6. More than $1 million went into the renovation, which included a fitness center and an area for teenagers, according to WDSU-6.

Vital Fitness Studio is planning to expand into a space once occupied by NM Café, a street-level eatery adjacent to the flagship Neiman Marcus in downtown Dallas, according to the Dallas Morning News. The expansion would double the size of the studio to 7,000 feet. Vital is currently under renovation with plans to launch a group cycle class in July.

Frog Fitness recently opened in The Woodlands, Texas. The concept is built around the "Frog," a piece of fitness equipment developed by Frog Fitness founder Richard Pierce. The "Frog" name was inspired by former Mr. Olympia Phil Heath and earned an order from the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, according to The Woodlands Online.

Gil Tal and Sal DePaolo have launched The Squat Academy in the New York City borough of Staten Island, and they plan to relocate the business to a CrossFit gym in the borough once it is completed, according to silive.com. DePaola, a firefighter, has appeared on ABC's "Shark Tank" and was featured in the 2015 FDNY calendar.

Granite City Group Fitness is expected to open July 5 in Barre, Vermont, according to The Barre Montpelier Times Argus. Brittany Tuller and her fiancé, Brett, are opening the studio with a variety of group exercise programs in the 1,600-square-foot space.

A ribbon cutting for Cheers Fitness, a competitive cheerleading center, was held June 4 in Great Falls, Montana. Owner Becky Acra plans to develop a portion of the center for group fitness classes for parents while they wait for their children, among other uses, according to KRTV.

The Dawn Wells Fitness Studio, Rockdale, Georgia, held its grand opening on June 11, according to the Rockdale Citizen. Owner Dawn Wells is a traveling fitness professional who has trained corporate and government employees on behalf of Blue Cross Blue Shield and other organizations.

Beat Box, a boutique boxing franchise startup, has received $10,000 from the University of Chicago's New Venture Challenge to open its first location, according to ChicagoInno. The founder is University of Chicago Booth student Katherine O'Connor.
