CORVALLIS, OR -- When most people think of college teams, it’s usually accompanied by visions of brightly colored, appropriately menacing animal mascots and huge roaring crowds. But what about college students who just want to play the game?

An estimated 75 percent of all college students who have access to recreational sports activities participate in them, according to a 2002 study by Kerr & Downs. When it comes to championships, varsity sports have the NCAA; recreational sports have the National Campus Championship Series (NCCS), presented by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) and its NIRSA Services Corporation (NSC). NCCS events provide annual official championship tournaments in six of the most popular recreational, intramural, or club sports on campuses: flag football, basketball, tennis, soccer, volleyball and golf.
