WEST COVINA, CA -- Authorities say a man beat his estranged wife with a handgun and shot her in the leg at a Bally Total Fitness in California.

The suspect, Edward David Leon Jr., remains at large, police told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Witnesses reported the incident to police shortly after 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The gun went off during the incident and a bullet struck the woman in the leg, police said.

The couple then drove off after the man forced the woman into the car, the newspaper reported. The woman was treated at a Los Angeles clinic for the gunshot wound and released later that night. She later refused to give information to police about her husband or the incident.

The Bally corporate office in Chicago is aware of the situation but had no further updates.

“Nothing is more important than the safety and security of our members,” Bally spokesperson Pete Marino told Club Industry. “We took swift and appropriate action and are currently cooperating with the police on their investigation.”
