The 33rd Annual International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) Convention and Trade Show is set to open March 12 in San Diego, drawing an international crowd of commercial club operators and staff to the San Diego Convention Center for four days of seminars and two days of exhibits.

Seminars and keynotes will occur March 12-15. The trade show floor, which has 375 exhibitors in 190,000 square feet of exhibit space, will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific time on Thursday, March 13, and again on Friday, March 14. The early-morning workout will be from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Friday, March 14, on the trade show floor. Attendees will be able to participate in 25 exercise classes at both the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina (including one in the hotel pool) and the convention center in addition to everything on the exhibit hall floor.

This year's first-day keynote presenter is Sally Hogshead, a best-selling author, whose presentation "How to Fascinate: From First Impressions to Lasting Value" will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12. That evening at 7:30 p.m., IHRSA will host its opening night reception at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina. For the first time, trade show-only attendees also can attend the opening reception by purchasing a ticket for $50.

Back at the convention center, Dan Heath, author and senior fellow at Duke University's CASE Center, will offer the keynote "Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work" at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 13. IHRSA will hand out several awards during the conference. ABC Financial, Sherwood, AR, will receive the Associate Member of the Year award on Wednesday, March 12. This award is presented annually to recognize an IHRSA member for its significant contributions to the advancement of the health club industry, as well as its support of IHRSA, its members and its mission through program and event participation, advertising and sponsorship. ABC Financial, an IHRSA member since 1986, was selected as this year's honoree due to its decades of achievements, innovations and support of the health and fitness industry, its continued investment in leading-edge technology, marketing programs and software solutions, and its support of IHRSA and its members, according to an IHRSA press release.

More IHRSA Awards and the Bash for Augie's Quest

Patsy McLean, director of group exercise at the Adelaide Club in Toronto, Canada, will receive the Julie Main Woman Leader Scholarship on Thursday, March 13. According to IHRSA, the scholarship is awarded to a woman who exemplifies what Julie Main, a fitness executive who died of cancer, stood for: courage, perseverance, excellence, and professionalism. Like Main, McLean also faced a cancer diagnosis. Now a melanoma survivor, McLean launched a cancer-specific exercise program at the Adelaide Club and leads wellness seminars where she shares her message that life's challenges can be overcome through healthy living.

Gold's Gym Dutchess County (NY) will receive the Outstanding Community Service Award on Friday, March 14. This award is presented to an IHRSA member that has made a longstanding commitment to making a difference in and beyond its community. Gold's Gym Dutchess County's reach extends far beyond the walls of its two clubs in Fishkill and Poughkeepsie, NY. The business is a regular supporter of organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association and The Renegades' Pitch for Kids, a local foundation that focuses on strengthening children and families.

"On behalf of IHRSA and the entire industry, I commend each of these three outstanding IHRSA members for their exceptional commitment and service to their communities, their customers and of course, to the betterment of the health and fitness industry," said Joe Moore, IHRSA President and CEO.

The ninth annual Bash for Augie's Quest will be held Friday, March 14, at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina. A cocktail reception and silent auction will begin at 6 p.m. in the San Diego Ballroom. The dinner, awards and live auction are set for 7:30 p.m. in Marriott Hall. Jann Carl, formerly of "Entertainment Tonight" and current co-host of the rural lifestyle show "Small Town Big Deal," will serve as the event's emcee, and the band Smash Mouth will provide the entertainment.

Augie Nieto, the chief inspiration officer of Augie's Quest, and his wife, Lynne, will once again be on hand for the festivities. Proceeds for the event will go to Augie's Quest, which has raised more than $39 million since 2006 to help find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease.
