Everything seems to be perpetually in motion in New York City, and at the Club Industry East conference and trade show, May 5-7 in New York, you may feel you are perpetually in motion considering all that is planned for the three-day event.
The conference and trade show, which will be held at the Javitz Convention Center, is packed with more than 70 seminars, three keynotes and networking opportunities that will keep you busy — even when you're not on the trade show floor checking out products. And conference organizers are trying some new things this year, including shortening the seminars to three days, moving trade show hours to Wednesday through Friday (from Thursday to Saturday) and skipping early morning workouts on the trade show floor in favor of a networking breakfast and keynote speaker.
It all begins on Wednesday, May 5, with seminars that start at 9 a.m. and go until 4:15 p.m. From 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., you can participate in roundtable luncheons that will be organized by topics. Later that day, attendees are invited into the exhibit hall from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the opening night reception and visits with exhibitors.
The next morning, May 6, seminars begin at 8:30 a.m. and last until 5:15 p.m. To visit the exhibit hall, however, you'll have to wait until 12:30 p.m. for the doors to open. The hall will close at 5 p.m. that day.
From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Bucky Dent will offer the keynote address, “A Game of Moments: Leveraging Your Advantages for Long-Term Success.” The former New York Yankees shortstop and major- and minor-league coach and manager now owns the Bucky Dent Baseball School. He will share his perspective on running a successful business and the power of sports in the fitness world.
At 4 p.m. on Thursday, Phil Kaplan, president of Be Better Solutions Inc., and Kelli Calabrese, president of Calabrese Consulting, will moderate an industry forum titled “Can Personal Trainers Cure Disease?” Panelists will debate what needs to be done to make personal training and exercise a part of the solution to the country's health care problem.
Instead of early morning workouts on Friday, you are invited to a networking breakfast that starts at 8:30 a.m. Included as part of the breakfast will be a presentation by Matthew Long, New York City firefighter and founder of the I WILL Foundation. Long will talk about how he recovered from paralysis after being hit by a bus. He now runs in marathons and does Ironman competitions.
Immediately after the networking breakfast and presentation, attendees can listen to the free keynote address by Ali Vincent, winner of NBC's “The Biggest Loser.” In her presentation, “1+1=3: Together, We Can Accomplish More Than We Can On Our Own,” Vincent will share her perspective on how fitness professionals can better comprehend the needs of the inactive population and reach out to them in a meaningful way.
Friday's seminars run from 10:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The exhibit hall will open on Friday at 10 a.m. and close at 2 p.m. While you make your way around the show floor on the last day, don't forget to check out the Club Studio (which will be open Wednesday evening and Thursday as well). The Club Studio will host demonstrations of various classes, including traditional/mixed martial arts, taekwondo andkung fu. Demonstrations will take place in a special half cage.
Also taking place at Club Studio will be a new event — a group fitness competition. Stop by to see the hottest group fitness classes from facilities on the East Coast.
On Thursday and Friday during exhibit hall hours, the Ask the Experts lounge will be open. Stop in to see the schedule of industry consultants who will be available to answer your questions about club operations, design and programming.
