ORLANDO, FL -- At the Athletic Business Conference and Expo last December in Orlando, a pre-conference tour featured the University of Central Florida’s athletic facilities. The campus’s state-of-the-art, 84,000-square-foot recreation and wellness center was among those facilities.

The center has been a major attraction for Central Florida students, so much so that they’re shunning their campus workout facility to work out elsewhere, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

“I feel that the UCF gym is a great addition to the school, but it should have been expanded a while ago,” student Josh Roller told the newspaper. “There are always people waiting, depending on what time you go.”

The recreation and wellness center features four indoor multipurpose courts, an indoor track, a 3,000-square-foot cardio floor and a 12,000-square-foot weight floor.

Jim Wilkening, the director of the center, tells the newspaper that design work has begun for the center’s expansion, but that it will not be completed until the spring of 2010 at the earliest.

Some students choose to work out at neighboring clubs, such as LA Fitness, Planet Fitness and the YMCA, the newspaper reported.
