Cybex, Life Fitness, Precor and Star Trac are among 26 equipment manufacturers named in a lawsuit for patent infringement.

SmartFit Solutions LLC filed the complaint on Sept. 14 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division. The Texas-based company is represented by Navarro Huff PLLC, a Dallas-based law firm which focuses on patent litigation and patent monetization.

In the complaint, SmartFit says it was issued a patent titled “Method of Exercise Prescription and Evaluation” on Sept. 30, 2003, by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The company’s invention includes systems and methods for using exercise devices with processors having protocol generating algorithms, according to the complaint.

The defendants in this case, SmartFit claims, have committed patent infringement in the state of Texas and the Eastern District of Texas by making, using, importing, selling or offering products that have the exercise devices with processors described in the patent. The complaint lists all the manufacturers who are named as defendants.

SmartFit, which claims it has suffered monetary damages in an amount not yet determined, demands a jury trial.
