Nearly 5,000 coaches and Jewish athletes from across the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Israel, the United Kingdom and Venezuela convened at three sites this month to take part in the 25th anniversary Jewish Community Center (JCC) Maccabi Games, an Olympic-style athletic competition. Host communities included Houston (Aug. 5-10), Baltimore (Aug. 5-9) and Orange County, CA (Aug. 12-17). The games gave Jewish teens the chance to compete in 14 team and individual sports and to participate in other social programs that promote friendships, community service projects and informal educational instruction, according to the JCC.
ACE-certified professionals and the American Assocation of Retired Persons (AARP) joined together to launch a new fitness program for AARP members. The program's goal is aimed at getting AARP members to lead healthier and more active lifestyles.
The Oaks at Ojai, a California fitness destination spa, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in October. The spa includes overnight accommodations, three meals a day, a choice of 16 fitness classes per day, and evening entertainment and seminars. The Oaks at Ojai will offer special discounts commemorating the anniversary in October.
The campus center at the University of Hawaii will receive a makeover, according to Honolulu TV station KGMB9. The state of Hawaii released $1 million in design and construction funds for the renovation, according to the station. The total cost is expected to be $28.7 million to renovate and to expand the campus center by 64,000 square feet.
