COLUMBIA, SC — Last month, a bill that would prohibit automatic renewal of health club contracts was referred to the South Carolina House Committee on Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs after being introduced in the South Carolina House of Representatives. The bill would also limit the duration of month-to-month health club contracts to no more than 12 months.

The International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) in Boston is lobbying to help defeat this bill.

“Our position on any type of automatic renewals restriction is that it places undue administrative and financial burden on health clubs and also limits consumer choice,” says Amy Bantham, the government relations manager with IHRSA.
