SANTA BARBARA, CA -- Julie Main, co-owner of West Coast Athletic Clubs, Santa Barbara, CA, passed away on Monday of cancer. She was first diagnosed with cancer in 1993 and had been in remission until a few months ago.
Main was a past president of the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) and of the California Clubs of Distinction. IHRSA created the Julie Main Emerging Woman Leader Scholarship in her name, handing out the first award at the IHRSA show in March. Main was not able to be at the conference in San Francisco because of her illness.
Main also co-founded the Cancer Well-Fit Program, which trains health clubs and health care operators on exercise programs for cancer patients.
Main was a member of the editorial advisory board for Club Industry’s Fitness Business Pro magazine and served as a judge for the magazine’s Best of the Best contest for the past two years.
Services will be held at Temple B’Nai Brith at 10 a.m. on Friday. Graveside services afterwards will be private, and the family will sit shiva at Main’s home from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday.
A friend of Main’s indicated that the family will plan a memorial service later this month to commemorate her life.
