Health and fitness facilities in the spotlight

* Carilion Health System is building a $5 million fitness center in Botetourt County, Va. The 40,000-square-foot facility will offer an indoor and outdoor pool, rehabilitative therapy, and programs and equipment similar to Carilion's Roanoke Athletic Club (RAC). Carilion expects to complete the new facility by the spring or fall of 2000.

* Lori Fetrick - better known as Ice Ice Baby to fans of the American Gladiators - has joined the Better Bodies family of licensed hometown gyms. At press time, she expected to have her Winter Park, Fla.-based facility opened by mid-August.

* Chase Park Plaza (AKA "The Chase") has a new addition: St. Louis Workout, an 18,000-square-foot health club that features cardio and strength-training equipment, a 2,500-square-foot aerobics studio, a wireless entertainment system, locker rooms with complete amenities, an outdoor pool and children's programming.

* Partners Marco Quintero, Tim Mahoney and Manny Baajour, all 25 years old, have opened the Platinum Fitness Center in Miami, Fla. The 14,000-square-foot, two-level club houses free weights, strength-training machines, an entertainment system, group cycling, yoga, childcare, a juice bar, a pro shop, sauna and steam rooms, tanning beds and massage therapy.
