Club Industry 2009 to offer broad range of seminars and events.
The Club Industry 2009 Conference and Exposition is expanding beyond fitness by offering a well-rounded array of programming and vendors to help fitness facilities serve a variety of clients and be in top form for the economic recovery. The conference and exposition runs Oct. 14-17 at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago.
For expert advice from the “godfather of fitness,” delegates can attend a keynote address by Jack LaLanne, the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award winner, at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15. LaLanne first appeared on TV in the early 1950s to promote a healthy lifestyle to millions of Americans. LaLanne also will be signing commemorative covers of Club Industry's Fitness Business Pro magazine for an hour after the keynote address, or until the free covers run out.
To further increase attendee success during the recession, Mark Mastrov, founder of 24 Hour Fitness and principal at New Evolution Fitness Co., will discuss “How to Deliver Record-Breaking Performance in Today's Economy” during a second keynote address at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16. Both LaLanne and Mastrov's sessions are free to all attendees.
In addition to a broad lineup of seminars from industry leaders, wellness will be a hot topic at the event, says Herbert Greenebaum, marketing manager for Club Industry trade shows. For example, an all-day session on worksite wellness is slated for Thursday, Oct. 15. (Visit http://clubindustryshow.com/national for the full schedule.)
“This is a transition phase for the industry. More clubs recognize that wellness is what people want,” Greenebaum says. “We'll talk a lot about diversity and programming to maintain clients, and customer service to retain clients — that's absolutely necessary in this climate.”
During the welcome reception at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, the new face of the Club Industry family will be unveiled. Attendees can get a sneak peek at the makeover, plus enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while networking with colleagues. The World Instructor Training Schools also will hold a drawing to give away a free Wii video system at the reception.
A special wellness networking luncheon at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, features David Patchell-Evans, president and CEO of GoodLife Fitness Centers in London, Ontario, Canada. For a $60 fee, attendees can enjoy lunch and a discussion about how to teach drive and passion to employees so they can inspire members.
A free Ask the Experts Lounge will be open during exhibit hall hours, which begin at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15. A full representation of leading consultants from all sectors of the fitness industry will be on hand in the exhibition hall, Greenebaum says.
Plus, attendees can check out new exercise equipment on the show floor, as well as the latest fitness apparel from a variety of manufacturers at a new Fitness Apparel Mart. And as always, there will be early morning workouts in the exhibit hall, plus a Boot Camp Challenge workout presented by Lori Patterson at 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Palmer House Hilton.
About 14 providers will offer continuing education units, including new partners National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association and the World Instructor Training Schools.
In light of the recent LA Fitness shootings in the Pittsburgh area, a special town hall meeting called “How Will You React in a Crisis?” is slated for 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16. The meeting, moderated by Stuart Goldman, managing editor of Club Industry's Fitness Business Pro magazine, will feature a panel of experts, including a representative from the American Red Cross and the International Association of Emergency Managers.
An Inclusive Fitness Pavilion, sponsored by The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability and the Inclusive Fitness Coalition, is planned on the show floor to provide a one-stop shop for advice and guidance about inclusive equipment, facility accessibility, staff training and marketing for people with disabilities. In addition, attendees can meet the magazine's editors at a designated time in the Resource Center.
