Club Industry East trade show takes New York by storm.
As the old song goes, New York is a “helluva town.” And next month, New York will host one helluva show.
Once again, Club Industry East conference and trade show will return to the city that doesn't sleep. From Monday, June 18 to Wednesday, June 20, thousands of health and fitness professionals will flood the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, doing their best to help contribute to New York's insomnia.
But don't think that Club Industry East will be a bad influence on New York. In fact, it's quite the contrary. Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani has recognized the show by proclaiming June 18-25, 2001 as “Health and Fitness Club Week” in New York City.
Club Industry East will kick off that week by giving fitness professionals plenty to do. For starters, more than 75 percent of the nearly 100 education sessions have never been offered before in New York.
In addition, Club Industry East will offer “Focus on Firefighter Fitness,” a special program sponsored by ACE, Life Fitness, Fire Chief magazine and 
Club Industry magazine. This program will include two free seminars on June 19: “The Fire Service Joint Labor/Management Wellness Fitness Initiative” and “Fitness in the Fire Station.” “Focus on Firefighter Fitness” will also include demonstrations of the Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) for firefighters.
“Giving Members What They Want: Now and in the Future” is another exciting event taking place at Club Industry East on June 18. Moderated by Club Industry Editor-in-Chief Jerry Janda, this free panel discussion will feature fitness editors from leading consumer magazines: Lou Schuler, exercise and fitness editor, Men's Health; Lynya Floyd, fitness editor, Seventeen; John Hanc, fitness and exercise columnist, Newsday; and Shaun Dreisbach, associate editor, Self. You won't want to miss this lively session.
Out on the trade show floor, you can visit 300 booths and examine all the latest products and services. The exhibit hall's doors open on Monday, June 18 at 11:30 a.m.
While you are walking the floor, make sure you stop by the Club Studio in booth 455 during exhibit hall hours to check out and participate in demonstrations of the latest cutting-edge group fitness activities. And if you are interested in furthering your career, stop by the Career Connection during exhibit hall hours in booth 855.
Another area to visit during exhibit hall hours is the Internet Café. Come check your e-mail, and find out how you can design your own Internet Café. The Internet Café Group — Sportskill, SolRaC, Food Sciences Corp. and Gymproshop — offer the industry the ability to deliver technology, Internet communication and e-commerce to members and guests in a most unique fashion.
If you're a little tired and hungry from your first day in the exhibit hall, you don't have to go far for a little pick-me-up. Come by the opening night Welcome Reception in the exhibit hall (June 18, 5 to 6 p.m.) and enjoy an evening of food, drink and music. Meet and network with operators and exhibitors.
While we hope that you enjoy the reception, don't forget about the Early Morning Aerobics from 7-7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19 and Wednesday, June 20 in the New York Marriott Marquis. And once you've recovered from the first aerobics session, come hear the keynote address, “Remaining Relevant,” by former three-term mayor of New York, Edward I. Koch, June 19, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Whatever his role — author, national TV personality, or man on the street — Koch always shoots from the hip. Hearing him live will be an unforgettable experience.
