Are you single? Recently divorced? You may want to stay that way if you want to stay physically fit.
That assumption stems from a recent study in the American Journal of Epidemiology which followed 8,900 adults—6,900 of those were men—over the course of more than three years. The study was conducted at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas.
Bottom line: Once people are married (and thus are no longer dating), they tend to fall off the fitness wagon. Those who are single or just ended a marriage tend to want to get back in shape.
Now, the study's findings are not necessarily that cut and dried, says Francisco B. Ortega of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Ortega, the lead researcher in the study, tells Reuters that an individual's fitness level depends on genetics, exercise habits, body composition and overall health. But newlyweds may want to keep up a fitness routine, he says.
