With Academy Award nominations just announced and the Super Bowl less than two weeks away, I uncovered some fascinating facts about a health club operator's husband who not only played in the National Football League but who also appeared in one of my all-time favorite films.
I recently interviewed Paula Neubert, president and general manager of Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club, Greenwood Village, CO, for an upcoming story on ancillary revenue. Our publisher, Marty McCallen, was just at Greenwood meeting with Paula and other club officials for a tour of the club.
A few days later, Marty mentioned to me that Paula's husband, Keith Neubert, played for the New York Jets. Here's proof of Keith's two seasons at tight end in the late 1980s, scoring a touchdown against Marty's Giants.
Now ordinarily, this information alone would peak my interest. But upon further review, this former Nebraska Cornhusker from Wisconsin also is an actor. In fact, Keith was the dentist in "That Thing You Do!" He had only one scene, but he was the one who made Charlize Theron, a relative unknown at the time who would go on to win an Oscar a few years later, basically speechless in the movie.
"Are you Tina?" Keith the dentist asks Theron's character.
After a long pause, still staring at him, she replies, "Tina! Yes! Yes, I'm Tina!"
"She's just one of the many girls I have had to deal with all our lives," Paula told me. "Sure makes our lives fun, though!"
That list of girls includes Gina Lee Nolin and Carmen Electra from "Baywatch." Keith also appeared in "The Young and the Restless" and "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place."
These days, Keith still finds himself in front of the camera. Paula says he has just booked a hosting job for a new show on the History channel, a spinoff of "American Pickers." He starts filming next month in Biloxi, MS.
Paula also says Keith appears in more scenes on the director's cut of "That Thing You Do!" The director, you might recall, was Tom Hanks.
I think I'll have to get a copy.
