YMCA Landlord Convicted of Embezzlement

The property manager of the Bethlehem (PA) YMCA's housing unit was convicted of stealing more than $94,000 from the Y.

After a three-day trial, Theresa Leguillow Flores was found guilty last Thursday of theft, receiving stolen property, tampering with records and two counts each of deceptive business practices and forgery, the Lehigh Valley (PA) Express-Times reported. Jurors placed the amount of money Leguillow stole at less than the $103,643 authorities had accused her of stealing, according to the newspaper.

Leguillow worked for the Y from July 2010 until August 2013, when she was fired for poor performance, according to testimony reported by the Allentown (PA) Morning Call. She was charged with the thefts in December.

From the Morning Call:

"Leguillow, 45, of Allentown was accused of providing tenants with handwritten receipts, then underreporting the payments to hide the money she skimmed. Authorities also alleged she made false debit card charges, took out unneeded emergency housing grants in tenants' names and stole quarters from the apartments' coin-operated laundry."

Leguillow claimed the Y's computer program did not perform well and crashed often, leading her to handwrite receipts for tenants.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 29. Leguillow, who could face up to 18 years in prison, was allowed to remain free on bail.
