Professor Dies after Swimming Laps in YMCA Pool

A Spanish professor at Western Michigan University died Saturday after she was found unresponsive in the bottom of a YMCA swimming pool.

The university announced the death of Carolyn Harris, who had served in the Spanish department since 1985. Harris, 65, had been swimming laps at the YMCA of Kalamazoo (MI)—where she regularly swam—when she had a massive heart attack, according to the university.

MLive.com and the university reported that Harris died at a nearby hospital. A representative of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety told MLive.com that YMCA staff found a woman who was later identified as Harris in the pool. Emergency workers spent a half-hour reviving her and re-establishing her heartbeat, and she was alive as she was transported to the hospital, MLive.com reported.

The department said it is not investigating the death further because it was not a homicide, MLive.com reported. An autopsy will be released at a later date.
