TERRE HAUTE, IN -- Riverbank Family & Fitness, a nonprofit fitness center that previously operated as the Terre Haute Family Y, closed suddenly today, according to multiple media sources.

Riverbank’s board met on Monday night and decided it did not have sufficient funds to operate the Terre Haute, IN-based center past today. The board also accepted the resignation of Greg Ruark, Riverbank’s executive director during the same meeting.

The center’s president, Tom Jones, told the Terre Haute Tribune Star that the facility needed $40,000 to $45,000 a month to operate but was only bringing in around $30,000 a month.

Employees were told of the club’s closure on Tuesday morning. Fitness club members and patrons of the center’s day care and pre-school services were notified the same day via a sign on the front door informing them that the center would close permanently at 5 p.m. today and requesting that they remove any personal effects from the building.

Although Riverbank separated from the YMCA in October, two nearby Ys today announced in a press statement that they would honor the defunct club’s memberships. The YMCA of Clay County and Paris Community YMCA will allow existing Riverbank members to use those facilities at no extra charge through Dec. 31.
