NAMPA, ID -- An unmarried same-sex couple received a family pass at the Caldwell (ID) Family YMCA after they were rejected for a family pass application by the Nampa (ID) Recreation Center, according to local media reports.
Nampa city officials told the couple, Rachel Dover and Amber Howard, that they can apply for individual memberships at the rec center. But Dover and Howard, who are raising Howard’s 4-year-old son, say those memberships would have cost them an extra $400.
In a statement, the Nampa Recreation Center said it uses the definition of marriage provided by the state of Idaho.
“The family pass is not available to any couples living together outside of marriage,” the statement said. “Children listed on a family pass must also be legal dependents of the parent or parents on the family pass. Those not eligible for a family pass are welcome to purchase individual passes.”
The Caldwell Family Y offers family memberships to two adults in a domestic partnership and their legal dependents up to 23 years old, Executive Director Scott Curtis told the Idaho Press-Tribune.
“We think that family comes in a lot of different constellations, and it’s our job to meet families where they are and help them grow,” Curtis told the newspaper.
A local Anytime Fitness and the Idaho Athletic Club also allow same-sex couples on family plans, according to reports.
