The YMCA in Grayslake, IL, will close on Sept. 1 due to space and expansion issues, according to Y officials.
A notice sent by the Y to existing members stated that the facility, which has been open since 1999, was located in a small storefront with limited space. That situation presented several challenges, including the inability to expand in order to provide a pool or additional programming to support the Y's mission.
“This is not the experience we wish to provide for our members,” the notice stated.
Y officials have no plans to open a new location in Grayslake.
“We are not exploring options to build another Y in Grayslake,” Sherrie Medina, vice president of marketing and communications with the YMCA of Metro Chicago, told the Grayslake Patch. “We understand some of our members are unhappy, and [we] are grateful for their connection to the facility and how much they care about the YMCA.”
Members can use the Y through Aug. 31. The Grayslake YMCA is offering open houses to the four surrounding YMCAs and is encouraging members to transfer their memberships to one of those facilities. Members who transfer will receive two months of free membership at their new Y.
