GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Gunshots were fired Tuesday night outside the David D. Hunting YMCA in downtown Grand Rapids, MI, leaving two people with gunshot wounds to their legs, according to the Grand Rapids Press.

The shootings took place at around 7:10 p.m. in the Y’s parking lot after as many as 10 people were involved in an altercation. One victim was found in the parking lot, and the other victim ran inside the Y and initially was treated there. The victims’ injuries are not life-threatening, and no other injuries were reported.

Sgt. Matt Janiskee told the newspaper the gunfire was the result of an argument that began inside the Y. Police were investigating whether the shooter or a weapon was inside the Y or if the gun was retrieved from a car. It was estimated there were hundreds of people inside the 159,000-square-foot building at the time of the incident.

“This is probably the worst time something like this could happen, when the place is full of people,” Janiskee told the newspaper.

Ron Nelson, the Y’s president and CEO, said a staff member told him there was “tension in the air” prior to the shootings and asked the arguing groups to leave the building. It is not clear whetherr those involved in the incident were Y members or guests.

No arrests have been made, according to the newspaper. YMCA spokesperson Rick Kamel said staff members have received a few calls about safety issues but that membership usage at the Y this morning was normal, the newspaper reported.
