BOSTON -- The Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston (JCCGB) recently announced it is closing the Striar Jewish Community Center in Stoughton, MA, and transitioning its services to the Old Colony YMCA of Brockton, MA.
The Old Colony Y will acquire the JCC and continue to provide fitness, aquatics and family-based services at the Stoughton location beginning on March 1, 2009, the JCCGB said in a statement released to media.
“Demographic shifts in the South Area Jewish population have reduced the ability of a central facility in Stoughton to serve an increasingly dispersed Jewish community,” the JCCGB said in the statement. The JCCGB also said it is creating a new service model that will use other South Area community and Jewish venues to provide programs and services to the South Area Jewish community.
Memberships for the Striar JCC will be converted into Old Colony Y memberships, which will not only cover services at the Stoughton location but will also allow members to use services and programs at each of the Old Colony Y branches. The JCC-run preschool and after-school programs will continue at Striar until June 2009. After that, the preschool will move to a new location in the community, according to the statement.
The JCCGB also has a health club/community center facility in Newton, MA, which it is continuing to operate.
