TOLEDO, OH -- Robert Alexander, president of the Greater Toledo YMCA, apologized to the community at a standing-room-only town hall meeting held Wednesday night and announced a campaign to keep the South Toledo Y open.
A new Save the South Y campaign will run now until Thanksgiving Day with a goal of selling 500 new South Toledo Y memberships to keep the location open. The Y will stay open until that time, Alexander said. The decision was made by the YMCA & JCC of Greater Toledo.
Last month, the Y announced it was closing the South Toledo facility on Aug. 29 and donating the building to the Cedarcreek Church because of state budget cuts.
In the new campaign, three-year memberships will be sold for the South Toledo branch in conjunction with the Morse Center, located at the University of Toledo Medical Center. The memberships will be sold at a reduced rate of $40 per month for individual memberships and $50 per month for a family.
The Y originally suggested that current South Toledo members use the Morse Center branch.
