JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Naval Air Station (NAS) Meridian in Mississippi gained approval to have its fitness center renovated by Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast, headquartered in Jacksonville, FL. In addition to upgrading the existing facility, a new aquatics center is planned for the station.
The $6.8 million project was awarded to F&T Joint Venture, Prospect Heights, IL, and is expected to be completed by March 2011.
“NAS Meridian is excited about this project. It will upgrade our fitness center to meet Navy standards and consolidate physical fitness activities in a central location, improving the quality of life for our service members and their families,” Capt. Charles Gibson, commanding officer, NAS Meridian, said in a statement.
The fitness center’s locker rooms are slated for renovation, which will include the restroom and shower areas. An aerobics studio, two racquetball courts and a jogging track also will be added to the existing fitness center.
The new standalone aquatics center will include a pool, decking, fencing, splash pad, locker rooms and bath facilities, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, pool mechanical and chemical storage.
Additional renovations will include replacing the fitness center’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system and extending it to the existing basketball court. Electrical and data circuits in the center will be upgraded to meet Antiterrorism/Force Protection requirements. A fire protection system also will be installed throughout the fitness center and the new aquatics facility.
