Portland JCC Unveils Multi-Million Dollar Makeover

PORTLAND, OR -- The Mittleman Jewish Community Center faced a drop in membership, a $2.5 million debt and calls for its closure less than two years ago, but after a six-month, $8.5 million fundraising drive, the center hopes to bring in new members. As part of the remodeling project, the JCC improved the workout facilities, saunas, whirlpools and locker rooms and added a new dining area, a 400-seat auditorium and more classrooms for the Portland Jewish Academy.

“Our equipment and facilities are as new as you can get,” Jeff Rudolph, manager, says in an article in the Oregonian. “We expect to bring in those who don’t mind spending $55 to $75 for a first-class program.”

The JCC hopes to raise another $4 million to improve the roof, heating system and exterior landscaping next year.
