AUSTIN, TX -- The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) set an attendance record with nearly 2,500 attendees at its annual conference and exhibition April 2-5 in Austin, TX.

Sid Gonsoulin, the associate vice president of student affairs and executive director of recreation at the University of Southern Mississippi, received the NIRSA Honor Award at the April 5 NIRSA Honor Award Banquet. The award is the highest honor presented to a NIRSA member for outstanding achievements in the profession.

Awards for outstanding sports facilities went to California State University-San Bernardino, the College of William and Mary, Georgia Southern University, the University of Maine and the University of Richmond.

The host school, the University of Texas-Austin, received five of the 11 first-place awards for creative excellence. Ohio State University claimed two first-place awards. The rest of the honors went to San Diego State University, Temple University, Indiana University and Florida State University.

NIRSA President Tom Kirch of Oregon State University passed to gavel to President-Elect Vicki Highstreet of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at the conclusion of the banquet.

Next year’s NIRSA conference and expo will be held April 1-4 in Charlotte, NC. For more coverage of this year’s show, check out Club Industry’s Fitness Business Pro’s blog.
