Capitol Gamees

Years ago “Mr. Smith” took a trip to Washington, D.C. and made quite an impact. Next month, the Club Industry East conference and trade show will make its first appearance in the nation's capital.

From June 26 to June 29, this year's show is expected to draw upward of 3,000 fitness professionals, predominantly from the East Coast, but also representing the rest of the U.S. and foreign nations. Among the attendees will be members of Mid-Atlantic Club Management Association (MACMA), a non-profit regional trade association representing more than 120 clubs and over 800 members throughout the Mid-Atlantic States.

“Making Club Industry East this year's official event gives our members the best of both worlds,” said MACMA Executive Director Tina Carroll. “We're delighted to provide them the enhanced opportunity to see more new products and enjoy the broad scope of educational sessions offered without leaving their home area.”

Zari Stahl, group show director for PRIMEDIA Business Exhibitions, feels that the joint arrangement will benefit the industry as a whole. “Holding Club Industry East in association with MACMA gives operators and suppliers alike the ability to better concentrate their time and resources this spring,” she noted. “The show is always a major attraction: the alliance this year will make it an even more significant event.”

And the event will be significant indeed, as attendees will have nearly 100 presentations by leading authorities to choose from, with over 75 percent of them new to the Club Industry East show.

The show kicks off on Wednesday the 26th with a slate of educational seminars. But it won't be all work and no play at the show. After a day of education, stick around the hall for the Opening Night Exhibit Hall Welcome Reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and begin your show experience with an exciting evening of food, drink and music, while meeting and networking with operators and exhibitors. But that's not all the excitement planned away from the show floor. After the show on Thursday, June 27, board a luxury coach for a wonderful evening driving tour with a tuxedoed waiter offering gourmet chocolates, champagne and sparkling water. You'll see such spectacular sites as the U.S. Capitol, White House, Smithsonian Mall, Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial. The optional tour is $47 per person (for details, call Robin Leven at 800-541-7706).

Highlighting the education sessions will be a Keynote Address given by Lisa E. Oliphant, executive director, President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. The Keynote, entitled “Making A Difference: How Fitness Facilities Can Reach Out to Their Communities” will take place on the second day of the sessions (June 27) from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oliphant's presentation at Club Industry East is part of her ongoing mission to promote efforts aimed at achieving important national fitness-related goals through cooperative efforts with the public, private and voluntary sectors. Learn how your club can do more to build community fitness.

When taking a break from the numerous educational seminars, attendees can see some of the newest products and services with displays by more than 100 top industry suppliers at the Washington (D.C.) Convention Center. While walking the floor, be sure to stop by the Club Studio and watch or participate in 45-minute demonstrations of the latest cutting-edge group fitness activities and learn how these programs build attendance for clubs.

But, if you really want to try out the latest classes and equipment take part in the Early Morning Aerobics on Thursday, June 27 from 7:00 to 7:45 a.m., at the Washington Hyatt hotel. On the following two days you can workout at the Early Morning Workouts from 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. in the Exhibit Hall and put the equipment to the ultimate test-your own workout. Free Continental breakfast will be available to help you refuel for a day of education and walking the show floor.

If you'd rather watch athletes than work out like one be sure to catch the Regional Special Olympics Bench Tournament presented by Developmental Fitness Co. and Special Olympics on Saturday, June 29. At this event you can see Special Olympian powerlifters in action, affiliated with fitness facilities from the entire Mid-Atlantic region. Bench press events begin before show hours and will continue all day.

No matter how far or near attendees and exhibitors travel, there will be plenty of things to see and do both inside the show and around the nation's Capital.
