More than 500 Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) sailors and civilians participated in the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 5k Run/Walk in early December on the waterfront in San Diego. The event, organized by the NBSD Morale, Welfare and Recreation department, commemorated thousands who lost their lives during the 1941 Japanese attack.

Retention Management's sales grew 655 percent from 2005 to 2006, according to results for the fiscal year that ended on Dec. 31, 2006. Growth came from most areas of the market, including independent clubs, medically based facilities, YMCAs, JCCs and multi-club companies, the company says.

Nautilus partnered with the National Academy of Sports Medicine to offer new education programs for fitness professionals and provide research and training support for new fitness products.

Ken Germano and Marc Onigman, who recently launched sales and marketing company Stone Hearth Fitness, are working with the American College of Sports Medicine on its ReFit program. The program is aimed at creating children's fitness facilities nationwide, including professional fitness mentoring, educational materials and an environment that will encourage participants to consider professional fitness-industry career paths.

ASF International sponsored a donation drive for the Denver charity, Family Tree. ASF's staff donated household items, toys, clothing and other supplies to help Family Tree's Women in Crisis and House of Hope shelters. ASF also made a cash donation to the charity.

Fitness Together, a personal training organization, opened 29 studios in the last quarter of 2006, a 16 percent increase over the same period the previous year, says Rick Sikorski, CEO of the Highlands Ranch, CO-based company. In all, 91 studios were opened in 2006.

Town Sports International Holdings Inc. (TSI) opened its 100th New York Sports Club in the metro New York area. The 15,000 square-foot club in midtown Manhattan offers equipment with audiovisual entertainment and studios featuring cycling and group ex classes.

Gold's Gym Capitol Hill recently opened its newly renovated facility in Washington, DC. The redesigned 19,000-square-foot facility provides upgraded services including a newly designed free-weight floor, an additional stretching area and 42-inch plasma screen televisions. Group exercise classes, including Body Jam and Body Attack, were also new additions.

Bilancio, a fitness studio in Purchase, NY, recently opened. The facility, which is owned by Paul Bruni, offers personal training, Pilates, yoga and group exercise classes.

Iron Grip Barbell Co. recently joined the JCC Association's Continental Preferred Vendors program, which is offered to a select group of suppliers whose products meet the needs of JCC facilities. As a preferred vendor, Iron Grip will be recommended to the JCC's network of more than 275 JCCs, YMCAs, YWCAs and summer camps throughout North America. Iron Grip will also sponsor the JCC Professional Conference and Biennial Conference.
