Tyndall Air Force Base, FL — Last month, Tyndall Air Force Base, FL, broke ground for an energy-efficient fitness center. The 75,000-square-foot Fit to Fight facility is slated for completion in 2010.
The Air Force has designated the center as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) project, which means the facility is being designed to achieve gold LEED certification. To achieve this certification, projects must meet standards in five categories: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
"This building will be a spectacle of beauty, functionality and energy efficiency," says Ann Garner, 325th Civil Engineer Squadron chief of engineering. "This building will serve to educate the base population on the importance of energy conservation and sustainable development."
The groundbreaking ceremony featured opening remarks from Brig. Gen. Darryl Roberson, the 325th Fighter Wing commander, and recognition of many of the key personnel involved in the facility's development.
