NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The hangar bay gym aboard the Navy’s USS Enterprise (CVN 65) officially reopened last month in preparation for the ship’s upcoming return to the fleet.
The ship’s gym was outfitted with all new exercise equipment, including machines designed for aerobics, flexibility and strength training.
"It’s very convenient for sailors to have a place to work out on board again, especially since the crew has moved back onto the ship," Seaman Patrice Porter, gym supervisor, told a military reporter. "Exercise is essential to fitness, and with the physical fitness assessment coming up, the demand is extremely high."
The Enterprise currently is undergoing maintenance at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding-Newport News. The USS Enterprise was the Navy’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. It became the oldest active ship in the Navy after the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) was decommissioned in May 2009.
