LITTLE CREEK, VA -- A soon-to-be-deployed Navy SEAL team from the East Coast participated in a Commodore's Cup Fitness Competition on Aug. 21 at the Naval Amphibious Base in Little Creek, VA.
The Commodore's Cup is an Olympic-style competition designed to reinforce the Navy's culture of fitness and boost healthy competition among participants.
The event was hosted by the staff of Naval Special Warfare Group 2 (NSWG2) Human Performance Program (HPP) to gauge the fitness levels of Navy SEALs.
"The competition was designed to develop inter-team competition and determine who is excelling in fitness in our SEAL teams," Dallas Wood, the HPP program manager for NSWG 2, told military reporters. "The HPP offers a goal-oriented, holistic approach to fitness for the operators. We also offer individual help, testing and nutritional support."
The SEALs competed in several events, including a sandbag throw, a maximum bench press contest, a 5-kilometer run, a one-mile swim and a pull-up competition that challenged athletes to do as many pull-ups as possible wearing a 25-pound weight.
Several other East Coast SEAL teams are planning upcoming Commodore's Cup competitions, schedules permitting, Wood said.
"We will test each team individually and compare their average scores to see which SEAL team has the best performance standards," Wood said. "This is a good measure of their readiness. Fitness, to the Navy SEAL operator, is the most important part of their training. Their success in everything comes from their fitness."
