BREMERTON, WA -- The Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) hosted a health and fitness expo on May 15 to celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.
Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) fitness trainers and Kitsap Family Armed Services YMCA staff were on hand to answer questions about nutrition and sports injuries, as well as showcase the services they offer.
"May is when we really come out of the long cold winter months and get outside to do outdoor activities,” Janet Mano, NHB population health coordinator and event organizer told Navy reporters. “We have MWR here to show all they have to offer. Our physical therapy staff is here to tell us how to avoid injury and even our community partners from the Armed Services YMCA to describe their military family programs."
Event organizers planned a Poker Run/Walk in which participants collected five playing cards on a 1.5-mile course and received a sixth card for completing a 3-mile course. The athlete who collected the best poker hand won a 60-minute massage, and second- and third-place participants each received a 30-minute massage.
The hospital also hosted the third annual Naval Hospital Ride to Work Day to promote health and networking through group bike rides.
According to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, May has been observed as National Physical Activity and Sports Month since 1983.
