PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, CO -- In preparation for the new Air Force physical fitness standards, fitness centers in the Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) received $4 million for facility upgrades, including $600,000 for new equipment.

The facility upgrades will include construction projects, such as renovated locker rooms, equipment repairs, resurfaced running tracks, fences and new heating and air conditioning equipment.

“Our team worked very hard with our bases over the last couple of years to develop prioritized lists,” Capt. Joy Tredway, AFSPC/A1 Services Division, said in a statement. “When we obtained this funding, we already knew their needs and could execute quickly.”

AFSPC fitness centers are expected to receive the new equipment by the fall. The process was easier to execute because they did not have to rely on end-of-year funding, Tredway noted.

The new fitness standards took effect July 1 and stipulate that airmen must take a physical fitness test twice a year. The standards were later revised to say airmen who earn an overall score of 90 or above will only be required to take the physical fitness test once a year.
