From October 13 through 16, Club Industry's annual trade show will have attendees striving to seek and find out about the newest trends in the health club industry. Held at the McCormick Place in Chicago, the show will feature lectures and seminars, new products and the second annual Lifetime Achievement Award.
The keynote session on Oct. 14 at 11:30 a.m. will feature Lisa Ford, an authority on customer service and loyalty. Ford's speech will focus on retaining members and providing the best in customer service at a club. Ford has more than 20 years of experience in the field of customer service, and she gives more than 100 lectures a year to companies such as Kodak, Viacom and Verizon about customer service, leadership, team issues and change.
Directly after the keynote presentation, Fitness Business Pro magazine will posthumously award its second Lifetime Achievement Award to health club visionary and founder of Gold's Gym, Joe Gold, who passed away in early July. Mike Uretz, Gold's colleague and close associate, will accept the award for Gold and will reflect on the impact that Gold made to the industry.
After the award presentation, participants can check out the trade show floor, which features the newest fitness products on the market. More than 200 exhibitors will be there with products ranging from strength training and aerobic equipment to nutritional supplements, customer database software and spa equipment. Many of these vendors will offer show discounts on their products.
After a little shopping, you can acquire new knowledge at one of the show's seminars and discussions. A Fitness Summit will be held on Friday, Oct. 15. This free event, “Fattest to Fittest: How Communities Are Becoming Proactive About Exercise and Nutrition,” will feature speakers who are trying to change the exercise and diet habits of the people in their communities. The summit will focus on how to create outreach programs to improve civic health and fitness, and get your community off the Men's Health list of the country's fattest cities.
Two free special seminars are being offered. On Oct. 14 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Human Resource Store and ComedySportz will host the first seminar, “Dealing With Difficult People.” Back by popular demand, this seminar is an interactive workshop that uses improvisational skits to look at how to deal with even the most trying of customers. You will also get to build your own behavioral profile so you can see how others view you.
On Friday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m., Melinda Minton, president of the Spa Association, will host the second free seminar, Spotlight on Spas. This seminar will look at the latest information from a new industry study on where spas are going and what current numbers look like.
In addition to these special seminars, there will be more than 125 other seminars in eight topic areas: Business & Financial Management; Executive Roundtables; People Management & Self Management; Personal Training; Programming, Wellness & Healthcare; Sales, Marketing & Promotion; Service & Member Retention; and Spa.
As in past years, you attendees attend early morning workout sessions beginning at 7 a.m. each day including a specialized floor Pilates program on Thursday and workouts on equipment in the exhibit hall on Friday and Saturday, And don't worry about eating breakfast before your workout or a post-workout fueling — continental breakfast will be served at the hall.
Attendees also can check out the Club Studio, an interactive demonstration area featuring 45-minute presentations scheduled for throughout the show. Presentations range from Pilates to martial arts to dance workouts. The Club Studio will also host the newest addition to the Club Industry show, the Club Studio Fitness Fashion Show on Friday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. Make sure to stop by and see the newest workout wear from Faremon, Blue Fish and many others.
If attending informative sessions, seeing the newest products available and networking with other facility owners and operators from around the country sounds good to you, sign up now for Club Industry 2004. It is an event you don't want to miss. Registration is still available on-site and online at www.clubindustryshow.com.
