OAKLAND PARK, FL — Last month a jury ordered LA Fitness to pay $619,650 to the family of a man who died from a heart attack in 2003 at its Oakland Park, FL, club. At the time, the facility did not have an automated external defibrillator (AED) and no one performed CPR on the man.
Whether the decision was based on lack of AED or lack of CPR is unknown, said Helen Durkin of the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association. Rulings in past cases involving AEDs found that in states not requiring AEDs in clubs, no standard of care had been found requiring a club to have an AED. In Florida, only Weston County requires clubs to have an AED. This facility is in Broward County. All LA Fitness facilities now have AEDs.
