LOS ANGELES — The Sports Club Co. is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Having ushered in a new era of fitness with the opening of their first club in 1979, the company continues to be a force in the industry a quarter century later, with its urban country club concept.

Launched on April 16, 1979 under its first banner, The Sports Connection, The Sports Club Co. opened its doors to 4,000 members by creating its “it's not just a health club it's a lifestyle” environment, intersecting fitness and luxury, which attracted LA's hippest and hottest influencers from the onset, including Sting, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Demi Moore, John Travolta, Nicole Kidman and the Emmy Award-winning cast of Hill Street Blues, according to the company.

“The concept of working out did not exist for most people at that time,” stated co-founder Nanette Pattee Francini in a press release. “By introducing the destination athletic club we were able to set a new standard in the industry and dictate trends with our innovative fitness concepts and overall lifestyle philosophy.”

From its beginnings, the company now boasts a roster of 10 luxury sports & fitness complexes nationwide — under The Sports Club/LA banner — The Sports Club Co.

“The Sports Club Company is dedicated to meeting the unique fitness needs of our members by providing an environment of luxury, convenience and exceptional amenities such as our Member Concierge service,” said co-founder Michael Talla. “We are constantly watching and reaching not only for what will excite and motivate our members to a healthier lifestyle but also for what will enhance and support the communities that we serve. Being an integral and vital part of those communities — giving back — is a big part of our concept and our mission.”
