TRENTON, NJ — A New Jersey bill that would exempt fitness clubs from a 7 percent sales tax and would give club members a refund for sales tax they've paid on memberships has been put on hold.
New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine expressed concerns about for-profit clubs getting a tax break, but he does support repealing the sales tax for nonprofit clubs, according to the Express-Times.
The Assembly Appropriations Committee sent legislation to the full Assembly on March 6 for a March 8 vote that was put on hold. The Assembly is on break until May.
“It is my hope and expectation that we'll get this through,” says Patrick Diegnan, one of four assemblymen who sponsored the legislation. “I don't think [Corzine] necessarily said he wouldn't sign it. I think he just basically said he had a concern. We know he's got a tough job to do and he's got to balance this budget, so we're trying to work this out together.”
