SAN LEANDRO, CA — 24 Hour Fitness joined forces with basketball superstar Earvin “Magic” Johnson to celebrate the grand re-opening of the sixth 24 Hour Fitness Magic Johnson Sport Club, and the second club in the Bay Area. Located in the Bayfair Mall, this new concept club is a full-service fitness facility born out of the partnership between Magic Johnson Enterprises and 24 Hour Fitness.
24 Hour Fitness, 20 years ago, put down roots in the San Leandro community when it opened its first club and began what is now a 300-club national fitness chain. In 1983, the San Leandro location had 1,500 members and eight full-time employees, according to the club. Today, the 45,000-square-foot-club is nine times its original size and is one of only six Magic Johnson Sport Clubs in the 24 Hour Fitness family, according to the company.
“This club holds an important place in the hearts of the 24 Hour Fitness family,” said Mark Mastrov, chairman and CEO, 24 Hour Fitness. “In a way, this community started the round-the-clock business trend when late-shift factory employees began showing up at 2:00 a.m. in the early 1980s. Today, this club supports 2,000 workouts a day. To see it evolve into one of our new concept clubs is exciting.”
In addition to 175 pieces of fitness equipment, compared to the club's original eight Lifecycles, San Leandro's 24 Hour Fitness Magic Johnson Sport Club features an array of offerings and amenities including NBA regulation basketball courts, Magic Johnson memorabilia, advanced free weight areas, an indoor pool, whirlpool baths and spa, the company said.
All 24 Hour Fitness Magic Johnson Sport Clubs will be full-service fitness facilities with the latest in state-of-the-art exercise equipment and free weights. Members will also have access to amenities such as a whirlpool, a steam room and a sauna. The Kids' Club will provide an on-site babysitting facility and a wide assortment of fitness apparel will be available for purchase at the Pro Shop. All clubs will offer cutting-edge group exercise classes including low and high impact aerobics: step, turbo kickboxing
“24 Hour Fitness is part of a movement to make fitness a way of life,” said Magic Johnson.
“Together, 24 Hour Fitness and I are committed to helping people live better through fitness. It is an honor to help turn the first 24 Hour Fitness club into a Magic Club. The improvements made to this club over the past 20 years are incredible and it is our goal to continue to improve the club for years to come.”
