Katrina-Hit Clubs Begin to Assess Damage

NEW ORLEANS – Almost two weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit the Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida coastal region, clubs in the affected areas and the fitness industry are trying to pick up the pieces. Ken Reinig, president of Association Insurance Group, insures clubs all over the affected area including Metairie, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, LA; Biloxi, MS; and Mobile, AL. Although insurance claims are just beginning to come in, he estimated losses could exceed $10 million but said it was still too early to tell. Most of the larger clubs he insures have wind protection, but virtually none have flood coverage, he said. He estimated that rebuilding could take more than a year, and many clubs, especially those without flood coverage, would most likely not rebuild. If your facility has been affected by Katrina, or if you have plans to open your doors or donate to hurricane victims, please e-mail Jennipher Shaver, associate editor, to share your story.
