Club Industry managing editor Stuart Goldman (right) receives the Jesse H. Neal Award from Paul Maidment, principal and editor-in-chief of Bystander Media, at the Neal Awards ceremony March 10 at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City. Photo by Doug Goodman, courtesy of American Business Media.
Stuart Goldman, managing editor of Club Industry, received the Jesse H. Neal Award, which has been called “the Pulitzer Prize of the business media.”
Goldman won for his profile of Curt Beusman, who founded Saw Mill Club in Mount Kisco, N.Y. The article, titled “Renaissance Man,” appeared in the September 2010 issue of Club Industry.
Goldman received the award last month at the 57th Annual Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Awards ceremony held at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City. The Neal Awards, presented by American Business Media, drew 660 entries in 19 categories, which produced 43 winners.
Co-host Paul Maidment, principal and editor-in-chief of Bystander Media and former editor of Forbes.com and executive editor of the magazine, announced the winner in the Best Profile category. Maidment read of Club Industry’s entry: “A nice narrative with a clever use of the subject’s ‘commandments’ to make a connection with readers, this well-structured profile captured a long and active life of the subject. The judges considered it a ‘colorful portrait of a colorful pioneer in his industry.’”
Goldman shares in the award with former Club Industry senior art director Jennifer Ray, who was responsible for the layout of the article and for coordinating Beusman’s photo shoot at Saw Mill Club. Along with a plaque presented to Goldman, each received a medallion inscribed with their names.
The Neal Award is one of two prestigious honors Goldman has received this year. In January, he won the Eddie Award presented by Folio magazine for his profile of fitness industry legend Jack LaLanne in the October 2009 issue. Goldman won in the B-to-B, Recreation/Sports/Outdoor, Single Article category.
The Eddie and Ozzie Awards Gala was held at Sentry Center Midtown East in New York City on Jan. 25, two days after LaLanne passed away at the age of 96.
