LAKE FOREST, IL -- Sales of Life Fitness and Hammer Strength brand equipment were up by 9 percent year-on-year, according to the third quarter financial report from Brunswick Corp., the parent company of the Life Fitness Division.
In a conference call for analysts and investors, Dustan E. McCoy, Brunswick chairman and CEO, said the Life Fitness segment of Brunswick’s business performed “exceptionally well.”
“International sales were once again the primary contributor to strong quarterly growth,” McCoy said. Brunswick’s fitness segment sales totaled $137.7 million. Sales outside of the United States, which accounted for 56 percent of total fitness segment sales, increased by 10 percent from the third quarter of 2009.
The fitness segment also reported operating earnings of $17 million, up about 36 percent compared with $12.5 million in the third quarter of 2009.
“In addition to benefits from increased unit volumes, lower material costs and increased fixed-cost absorption contributed to the higher level of profits,” McCoy said.
The Life Fitness Division represents a relatively small portion of Brunswick Corp.’s business. The company’s marine engine and boat segments contributed heavily to its net sales figure of $815.4 million, up 22 percent versus third quarter 2009. The company’s total operating earnings of $25.2 million are a $134.6 million improvement year-on-year.
