SAN ANTONIO -- Spectrum Athletic Clubs, Los Angeles, announced last week that it has purchased the Concord Athletic Club & Spa in San Antonio from The Wellbridge Co.

The purchase of the 65,000-square-foot facility gives Spectrum 10 clubs in San Antonio, with an 11th set to open in June in the South Texas Medical Center. Spectrum also has 12 clubs in Southern California.

The Concord club will be renamed Spectrum Athletic Club at Concord Plaza. The club includes strength and cardio equipment, courts for basketball, racquetball and squash, a 25-meter indoor pool, and other amenities.

Spectrum has hired Concord’s 100 employees, says Andy Gillen, Spectrum’s chief operating officer.

“We’ve seen this as a great opportunity to add to our family of clubs for quite some time,” Gillen says. “It’s a fantastic outcome for members and staff at Concord. We’ll maintain that high-end presence in San Antonio.”

Spectrum has been without a CEO since Matthew Stevens left to become the new president and CEO of Western Athletic Clubs, San Francisco, last fall. Rahul Aggarwal, the managing director for Brentwood and Associates, Spectrum’s parent company, declined to give an update on a search for a new CEO.

The Wellbridge Co., where Stevens had served as an executive for nine years prior to his arrival at Spectrum, announced last week that it plans to open the Colorado Athletic Club at Tabor Center in downtown Denver in late 2009. The 39,000-square-foot club will include a 25-meter, four-lane indoor pool, cardio and strength equipment, group exercise studios, and other amenities.
