The Rhode Island Attorney General suspended a club for 30 days for filing a false fire inspection certificate.
Brian Gosselin, owner of Extreme Fitness in Cranston, RI, received the suspension Tuesday from Attorney General Peter Kilmartin. The club will be shut down from Feb. 21 through March 22.
Under Rhode Island law, health club facilities must annually register with the attorney general’s office, and registration and renewals must include a certification from the local fire department confirming the facility is in compliance with local fire code. Kilmartin says Gosselin knowingly altered documentation from the Cranston Fire Department as part of the renewal of registration.
“Certification of compliance with fire regulations is an important element of the registration and renewal application, and the required inspection is a necessity to ensure the safety and protection of the members who use health club facilities,” Kilmartin said in a statement. “By submitting an altered certificate, Mr. Gosselin potentially exposed all users of the facility to great risk.”
Gosselin pleaded no contest on Nov. 5 in Rhode Island District Court to one count of filing a false document to a public official.
