Planet Fitness has confirmed that a man who was killed in shootings Sunday night outside a Planet Fitness in San Antonio was one of its employees. A woman who was severely wounded in the shootings and remains hospitalized was a Planet Fitness member, according to the Newington, NH-based company.

The shootings took place after 7:15 p.m. Central time Sunday, according to several reports. The suspect, Yu Masaki, 27, was detained and arrested this morning. Contrary to several reports, Masaki was not a Planet Fitness member, according to the company.

The victim who was fatally shot was 31-year-old Juan Escamilla, according to a police report and a report by the Bexar County (TX) medical examiner’s office. The female victim, who was Escamilla’s girlfriend, according to reports, has been identified by police as 21-year-old Margaret McCombs.

Planet Fitness says the club in San Antonio is closed today. The company also has pulled its advertising in San Antonio and is arranging for grief counseling for the club’s staff.

“We are shocked by the horrific violence that claimed the life of one of our employees and left one of our members with very serious injuries,” Planet Fitness said in a statement to Club Industry. “While the exact details of what took place outside our gym still are not clear, we’re doing everything we can to assist San Antonio police in their investigation, and keeping the victims and their families foremost in our thoughts and prayers at this time.”

According to multiple media reports, Escamilla, McCombs and two other Planet Fitness employees walked out of the Planet Fitness at around 7:15 p.m. Sunday. The suspect, described in some media reports as McCombs’ “wannabe boyfriend,” approached her and Escamilla in the parking lot.

The suspect allegedly shot Escamilla in the upper torso several times. Escamilla died at the scene. McCombs fled, but according to information from San Antonio police Chief William McManus in the San Antonio Express-News, the suspect chased her and shot her multiple times in front of a Jason’s Deli. The other two employees walked in a different direction in the parking lot and were not injured, according to the report.

This morning, police surrounded the suspect at his apartment as he allegedly was carrying a TV out of one of the apartments, the Express-News reported. The suspect dropped the TV and allegedly began to reach for a gun in his waistband before police drew their own weapons and ordered him to the ground, the newspaper reported. An officer then kicked the suspect to the ground, and the suspect was taken into custody.

Masaki was charged with murder, attempted murder and attempted aggravated assault of a public servant, and his bail was set at $300,000, according to the Express-News.
